Why I'm comparing these two Gree options
I'm not an HVAC engineer. I'm the person who signs the purchase orders and then has to explain to my operations director why the room is still warm. I've been a purchasing administrator for a 90-person company for about six years, and I manage roughly $400,000 in annual spending across IT, office supplies, and building maintenance. That means I've bought portable air conditioners, mini splits, dehumidifiers, and a few things I wish I hadn't.

Inverter units help because they run at lower speed for longer, but only if the installer sizes the unit correctly.
A portable AC also removes moisture—many of them have a drain or a collection pan—but it's not the same as a dedicated dehumidifier. In our case, I added a standalone dehumidifier for the storage area because the mini split took care of temperature while the dehumidifier handled the damp. If you're comparing these two to fix a stale or muggy room, ask whether the real issue is heat or humidity. If it's humidity alone, neither AC is the perfect answer.
The lesson I keep coming back to: don't assume BTUs equal dryness. That mistake cost us two uncomfortable weeks in a meeting room where the portable AC made it cooler but not less damp.
Installation, control, and the thermostat wiring question
This is where many buyers stumble. I spent more time than I'd like to admit searching "how to wire a thermostat." I expected a mini split to use a standard 24-volt thermostat like a furnace. (For outdoor upkeep: I bought an EGO leaf blower to clear debris from the condenser before quarterly inspections. It won't replace a professional coil cleaning, but it's better than nothing.)
Total cost of ownership
In my January 2025 review of publicly listed prices, most Gree 1 Ton Portable AC listings were between $500 and $1,100. The Gree 30000 BTU Mini Split was usually $2,300 to $3,500 before installation. Once I added labor, line set, electrical work, and a small metal stand, the mini split was roughly four times the total cost of the portable.
That doesn't make the portable a bargain. It's less energy efficient, noisier, and has a shorter life. The mini split we installed runs on inverter technology, which is one of the main reasons I looked at Gree in the first place—the compressor adjusts instead of cycling on and off. Over a 7 to 10-year horizon, the mini split is likely to cost less to operate and maintain. But "likely" depends on how often you use it and what electricity costs are in your area.
I also learned the hard way about hidden setup costs. In my first year, I bought a portable AC for a conference room without checking the window type. The exhaust kit didn't fit the casement window.
