1. How do I test a Gree AC compressor to see if it's actually bad?

Short answer: You check resistance values with a multimeter, then check for a short to ground. But let me be specific.

I test compressors the same way every time. Disconnect power (obviously), pull the wires off the terminals, and set your meter to ohms. On a single-phase compressor like the ones in most Gree mini splits, you're looking for three readings: Common to Run, Common to Start, and Run to Start. The smallest reading should be C to R, and the sum of the two smaller readings should equal the largest reading. If those numbers are off by more than about 6%, the winding is likely toast.

Then—and this is the step I see people skip—check each terminal to ground. Anything above 10 megaohms is fine. Anything below 2 megaohms, and you have a partial short. That compressor needs replacing.

I had a call last winter where a facility manager insisted his Gree 9000 BTU mini split was "just low on refrigerant." He'd already called a tech who added a pound of R-410A. Didn't fix it. I showed up, tested the compressor, and it was shorted to ground at 0.3 megaohms. The compressor was done. 2. What's the actual difference between 8000 BTU and 9000 BTU mini splits for commercial use?

About 1000 BTUs of cooling capacity, obviously. But the real-world difference matters more in some applications than others.

For a small office (<200 sq ft), a Gree 8000 BTU unit will do the job in normal conditions. But here's the thing: if that room has a lot of electronics, or south-facing windows, or more than two people in it, the 9000 BTU unit gives you a buffer. For commercial spaces, here's my rule of thumb:

  • Use a Woozoo fan when you have an existing HVAC system that does the job 80% of the time, but you need to move air around to eliminate hot spots. The specific certification varies by model:
