Gree Heat Pump Remote Symbols, 5-Ton Sizing, and the Call That Wasn't an HVAC Emergency

I run emergency service for a commercial HVAC company in the Midwest. Between March 2024 and now, I've probably responded to 200+ after-hours calls where the problem wasn't what the caller thought it was. Maybe 200. Actually, 180 by my quick count; I'd have to check the log.

This isn't a '10 ways to fix your Gree heat pump' post. It's a what-to-check-before-you-pay-for-a-tech post. Because there is no single answer. If you're standing in front of a Gree system that's doing something odd, you need to sort the issue into the right bucket first.

  • Remote or control logic issue - mode symbols, setpoints, and the Gree remote making its own decisions.
  • Capacity or sizing issue - is a Gree 5-ton unit actually the right size for the space?
  • Air circulation issue - where a Woozoo fan can solve more than a new duct system.
  • Adjacent-equipment issue - hot water heater, freezer, and conditions that look like a heat pump failure but aren't.

Scenario A: Gree Heat Pump Remote Symbols Don't Match the Air

The most common emergency call I get starts like this: 'The heat pump is blowing cold air in the middle of winter.' By the time I get there, it's usually a mode problem. Gree heat pump remote symbols are fairly consistent, but they're not the same as a standard thermostat. The main ones you'll see: snowflake for cool, sun for heat, water drop for dry, fan blade for fan-only, and AUTO is usually either the word AUTO or a circular arrow, depending on the model.

If the remote is showing a snowflake and you need heat, press Mode until the sun appears. That sounds too simple, but I've watched a restaurant lose a lunch service over it. In January 2025, a client called at 11:15 AM with the front-of-house at 58°F and the remote reading 70°F. The unit was in dry mode, which can blow cool air even in winter. We fixed it in one phone call. The after-hours service call would have been $450.

The setting that causes more confusion is heat versus auto on a heat pump. If the system is in auto changeover, it may switch to cooling to remove heat even when you're trying to heat. That's not a malfunction. It's the remote telling the system to use both directions. I don't love auto changeover for commercial spaces because it invites comfort complaints.

Scenario B: A Gree 5 Ton Is a Size, Not a Number You Guess

I get asked about Gree 5 ton at least twice a month. Usually from a facility manager who lost a condenser and needs a like-for-like replacement by Friday. The answer is: maybe.

A Gree 5-ton unit moves 60,000 BTU/h. That's a large light-commercial system. But the correct size isn't determined by the old unit, no matter how tempting that shortcut is. The correct size is determined by a load calculation—Manual J for buildings, or at minimum a mechanical engineer's heat gain and loss sheet.

I learned that the hard way. A few years ago I assumed 'same specifications' meant the same replacement would work. Didn't verify. Turned out the old unit was oversized to cover a kitchen that had since been renovated with LED lighting and better exhaust hoods. The 5-ton replacement short-cycled for two summers before we fixed it. Actually, it short-cycled from day one; I just didn't want to tell the client we sold them the wrong size. So I recommended a 4-ton instead and did the load calc properly.

In March 2024, 36 hours before a grocery store's grand re-opening, their old 6-ton packaged unit died. We had two choices: find a 6-ton or run the load calc and see. The contractor had already left. I did the calc at the kitchen table—the store wasn't built yet, but the drawings were—and found 5 tons worked. We installed a Gree 5-ton ducted unit in two days. The store opened on time. So glad we didn't just order 6 tons. Gree's inverter technology and low-ambient capability are useful, but none of that matters if the size is wrong.

So what's the practical answer? If your previous unit ran for 12+ years, was sized by someone who measured the building, and you haven't changed the roof, windows, or occupancy—stick with the same size. If any of those changed, or if the old unit was oversized, do the load calc. '5-ton' is a capacity, not a category.

Scenario C: The Room Is Hot, but the Unit Says 72°F (Bring a Woozoo Fan)

This is the one where I save clients money. They call because a room is miserable. The thermostat at the wall reads 72°F, but the people working there are sweating. They want a new 5-ton system or new ductwork. Sometimes they actually need a cleaner filter. Other times they need a fan.

A Gree Woozoo fan looks like a small air circulator—not a box fan, not a tower fan. It pushes air in a tight column, so it's better at mixing room air than cooling a person. If you have high ceilings, long narrow rooms, or a return grill covered by boxes—I see that constantly—a Woozoo fan can move the air that the evaporator is putting out to where people actually stand.

I keep one in my service van because it has gotten me out of more emergencies than any software update. In June 2024, a dental office said the rear treatment room wouldn't cool below 80°F, and they were ready to pay for a new line set and an additional 2-ton mini-split. The Gree unit was cooling the supply air to 55°F. The problem was that furniture and a partition blocked the air path. The cold air dumped into the hallway and returned to the thermostat immediately. I put a Woozoo fan near the supply grille, aimed diagonally at the room. Temperature dropped 6°F in 15 minutes. The $5,000 mini-split project never happened. (As of July 2024, that office still uses that same little fan.)

This is the scenario people don't expect me to recommend. No new equipment, no refrigerant work. Just a fan placement change. But it's only the right answer if the cooling capacity and airflow volume are already acceptable. If the supply air is room temperature or the outdoor unit is cycling on the high-pressure switch, then a fan won't help.

Scenario D: It's Not the Heat Pump—It's the Hot Water Heater and the Freezer Burn

The strangest emergency call I took last winter was about a hot water heater and a freezer. A small takeout place called because the back storage room was hot, the hot water heater seemed to run all day, and frozen chicken was getting freezer burn. They were convinced the new Gree heat pump was overheating the room.

The heat pump was fine. The problem was that the hot water heater and the freezer were in a 6x8-foot closet. The water heater dumped heat into the space; the freezer rejected heat into the same space; and the heat pump—which was supposed to cool that space—was fighting a constant internal heat load. Worse, the freezer door gasket was leaking. Every time it cycled, warm humid air got in, which is exactly how freezer burn happens.

So let's separate this into two things.

Hot water heater: If yours is electric resistance, the heat it gives off is essentially money being spent twice. A heat pump water heater is usually more efficient, but if it's in a tight closet, it still needs airflow. Put it somewhere with clearance. As of January 2025, ENERGY STAR criteria for heat pump water heaters still favor models with higher efficiency. Check the yellow EnergyGuide label.

How to prevent freezer burn: Freezer burn isn't caused by a heat pump. It's caused by air reaching frozen food. The food dries out, gets white or grayish, and changes texture. It's safe to eat, but nobody wants to serve it. To prevent it:

  • Keep the freezer at 0°F or below. Use an appliance thermometer, not the dial.
  • Wrap food in freezer paper or plastic wrap designed for freezing, then squeeze out air. Vacuum sealing is even better.
  • Don't leave the door open. Frost on the packaging is a sign that warm humid air got in.
  • If the freezer sits next to a hot water heater, move one of them or improve ventilation. The extra heat makes the freezer cycle more, and more cycling means more frost and freezer burn.

The USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service says freezer burn is safe, but it affects quality. That's the practical reason to prevent it, especially for a food business.

So, Which Scenario Are You Actually In?

Before you call for a service technician, run through this quick triage:

  • If the system is running but the air is the wrong temperature, or the remote is showing an unfamiliar symbol, check the mode and setpoint first. That's Scenario A.
  • If the unit runs for five minutes and shuts off, or runs all day and never satisfies, and you're replacing equipment or you've made building changes, that's sizing. Scenario B.
  • If the equipment is doing its job but the space still feels wrong, look at airflow. A Woozoo fan or clearing supply grilles is often enough. Scenario C.
  • If the complaint involves a hot room because a hot water heater is in it, and the food is frostbitten, don't assume the heat pump is broken. Check the water heater and the freezer gasket first. Scenario D.

I'd rather spend 10 minutes on the phone explaining this than show up at 9 PM to press Mode twice. An informed customer asks better questions and makes faster decisions. And honestly, the best emergency call is the one that doesn't happen.

There's something satisfying about solving an emergency without replacing equipment. After all the stress, seeing a client realize they just needed a fan—or a better freezer wrapper—is the payoff.
